How It Works

A pager is a radio receiver. That is the whole idea.

Somewhere in California a paging transmitter broadcasts on a dedicated radio frequency at very high power. Every pager in range hears every message. Yours ignores all of them except the ones addressed to its own number.

One-way is the point

• It gets in where phones do not. A paging transmitter is far more powerful than a cell tower and uses a lower frequency, so the signal pushes through concrete, lift shafts and hospital basements.
• The battery lasts weeks. It only ever receives, never transmits, so there is nothing to drain.
• There is no network to congest. When a stadium or a disaster knocks cell service flat, paging keeps running.
• It cannot reply. Nothing to configure, nothing to hack, no data plan to run out of.

Three ways a message reaches you

1. Someone dials your pager number.
2. Someone uses a paging portal.
3. Someone emails your pager's own address. This is the one most people use.

Your pager has its own email address: your ten-digit pager number followed by @usamobility.net. Anything sent there arrives on the pager as a text message. That is what makes it useful. You can forward one person, one system, or anything marked urgent straight to your belt, and leave the rest of the internet where it is.
